DCAC Dedicates Reading Room at Liberty Square Head Start
The pre-k students, administrators and staff at the Easter Seals Liberty Square Head Start Center enjoyed quite the celebration on Tuesday, May 21st as chapter members held a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Dade County Alumnae Chapter (DCAC) Reading Room. The newly completed reading room is furnished with wall art, tables, chairs and shelves filled with books that will encourage early literacy and foster a love of reading amongst the children.
Chapter President Toni G. Harrison, Esquire was accompanied by DCAC Charter Member Beverly Nixon, past chapter presidents Karen Bullard-Jordan, Anne T. Herriott, Renée Jones, Bobbie Jones-Wilfork, 40th Anniversary Co-Chair Jane McQueen and other members of the chapter as they cut the ceremonial red ribbon signifying that the room was ready for use by Liberty Square students and teachers. The program included remarks given by Deltas and Head Start staff and a musical performance by the students. The reading room is beautifully decorated with colorful images and inspirational messages about reading. A painting by renowned artist C.J. Latimore was installed at the entrance to the room and includes a powerful message: “The quality of books I read determines my success in life.” This serves as a reminder of the importance of books for early learners as they develop language and thinking skills and build vocabulary and writing skills that will be used throughout their lives.
“We are excited to dedicate the Dade County Alumnae Chapter Reading Room so that the students have a place to enjoy story time and develop strong reading skills. The room is filled with a wide variety of books that will help them become excellent readers, spark their imaginations and cultivate an interest in literature and a lifelong love of reading,” said Chapter President Harrison.
